A little about Thanks Mama

Thanks Mama is sponsoring a Thirsties Duo All in One Diaper! Thanks Mama is family owned cloth diapering and natural parenting store based locally here in Boston, MA.  Carrying not just diapers and accessories they offer baby carriers, toys, baby and mom care products, baby room furniture and more.  A lot of what they carry they have also used in their family.  They are open to questions, opinions, suggestions and requests and do their best to introduce new products they believe will enhance the parenting experience

A little about Thirsties

Thirsties mission is to make it easy and affordable for every family to use cloth while investing in our local economy and sustainable business practices.  Only the best USA-sourced components are chosen for their products in order to reduce our carbon footprint, to help support domestic textile mills and local economy, and to ensure that Thirsties diapers will last wash after wash. They are committed to making a quality product with exceptional design and performance while saving us money.  Their products are USA-made by talented women, many that work from home.  The design of their diapers is carefully considered and all fabrics and components are selected for their high quality and strive to provide the best product for comfort and leak-proof diapering.

About the diaper

  • Two One-size diapers Size One (6-18lbs) & Size Two (18-40lbs)
  • All-In-One Diaper
  • PUL outer
  • 100% polyester microfleece inner
  • 100% polyester–3 layers of microfiber terry inner soaker
  • Double snap or hook and loop closure
  • Tunnel design for easy and faster drying
  • Snap-down rise with 2 settings (3 sizes)
  • FREE of VOC’s, PVC, phthalates, and lead

My Thoughts

We received the Thirsties Duo All in One Diaper in Mud. Thirsties is one of the first diapers and covers we owned almost three years ago when our cloth diaper journey began.  However this is only the second of their amazing Duo AIO that we own and unfortunately Kaleb has outgrown it due to it being a size one.  I was very excited to have the chance to review a size two.  The tunnel design does make for a faster drying time.  We line dry all our diapers and I find the DUO AIO is dry before our other AIO diapers, which is a bonus because they are hubby’s favorite because he doesn’t have to find inserts to stuff it.  The aplix is nice and sturdy and holds well unlike some other aplix I have tried, the only downfall with it is that Kaleb is at the age that he can remove almost any aplix diaper, though this one does give him a run for the money.  I prefer the fit however with an aplix because you can get more sizing options that snaps can’t (don’t take this wrong as I love both snaps and aplix for various reasons and it really is just a personal preference. This is another bonus with Thirsties products as they are available in both aplix and snaps).

The PUL exterior in not harsh and stiff like some, which is one of my loves as I have owned some diapers that had a very stiff feel to them.  My only dislike is I wish Thirsties offered more print selections but that is just because like clothing I like having a variety of looks.  The interior microfleece is very soft and even after line drying inside (which often leaves our diapers rough and stiff against the skin) it still came out soft.  I had no issues putting the diaper on Kaleb after line drying and didn’t feel the need to fluff it up like some others.  The triple layer microfiber terry soaker holds well while still allowing for the diaper to be trim unlike others.

The fit on the thighs is great without digging into to him.  I feel his clothing is protected in this diaper without worries of a blow out.  Often in a one size diaper I need to compromise with either a snug fit at the waist and a gap at the thighs or a lose fitting waist to achieve a snug fit on the thighs.  I’ve also had to unsnap the rise to a large setting on some diapers to accommodate his thighs resulting the the diaper reaching his chest at times.  I found that I did not have to do that at all with this diaper.  I was able to get a nice fit on the rise, thigh and waist all very easy, which can often be hard since Kaleb is at the squirming stage and constantly rolling over during diaper changes.

As you can see to the left or right Kaleb is on the medium setting, the second set of rise snaps on the diaper.  The aplix is also very close together which leaves a large amount of room to grow at the waist.  Being 21lbs now and only half way outgrown the diaper I can easily see this diaper lasting us to potty training.  While the suggested weight is 40lbs if you have a taller more slender toddler I can see this diaper fitting to perhaps 45-50lbs if they happen to train later or just grow faster.  I was surprised at how laid back he was during this diaper change, which was a complete opposite of our normal diaper change routine.  Often between adjusting snaps, rise snaps coming undone and him rolling onto his side at least three times it can take us sometimes upwards of 10 minutes to do something that shouldn’t take that long.  With the Thirsties Duo AIO I found the rise snaps to fit into place without being to lose and coming undone as I try to adjust the diaper, hold a squirming baby and get a nice fit.

The colors are very vibrant.  I have found that our DUO diaper we’ve had now for close to three years is still very vibrant.  Being that the PUL on the Duo AIO is the same I can see the color remaining just as vibrant after numerous washing.  The color and print selection is nice offering both gender specific and neutral options.

Where to buy and cost

You can purchase Thirsties Duo All in One Diaper and other Thirsties products at Thanks Mama. The cost of the Duo AIO diaper is $15.00 for solids and $16.00 for prints both come in snaps or aplix as well as size one or two!

Welcome to the sixth week of Tuesday’s Toddler Tales linkup hosted by Shannon from Mommy of One and Counting and myself. Each week we will bring you topics toddler related. Each week you can link up with us to share your toddler tales on our topic of the week.

Child/Children’s Must Have Item

Khloe’s must have item is her “animal blanket.”  She was never a lovey type of person, but when we went to visit my mom in California for 3 weeks (she was 2) she suddenly stole this blanket from Keira and claimed it as her own.  Now at 6 years years old she still needs it every night to sleep, carries it around the house with her and often has to take it on car rides.

Keira didn’t have a lovey at all until recently.  She was looking through all the toys and stuffed animals and asked me about a white bear wearing a pink sweater.  She wanted to know what the sweater said, so I told her “I was born at Melrose Wakefield Hospital” and that it was the bear I bought her the day she was born.  From that day on she named the bear Lovey and has him by her side almost all day and panics if she can’t see him.

Kaylee is not much of a must have type of girl.  She is happy to have any baby doll, Mickey or Minnie stuffed animal with her at night to cuddle with, but if she can’t find one generally she is ok.  She is more of a typical girl and constantly has to change her clothing and must have her favorite shirts whenever she sees they are clean.  Her favorite shirts are a green, hooded sweatshirt with Foofa (from Yo Gabba Gabba) on it, a red hooded Minnie sweatshirt and various pajama tops.

Kaleb prefers cars of kinds, but doesn’t really have a favorite anything just yet.

Eggs in the Basket Sponsor Spotlight: Happy Family Review

We were first introduced to Happy Family 3 years ago at our local cloth diaper store during the Great Cloth Diaper Change.  They were there handing out samples, the Drama Queens fell in love with their Happy Yogis and Kaylee (just over a year old at the time) went nuts over the broccoli, kale & cheddar cheese Happy Munchies!  Later that week I had to run out and purchase more of their products because I was excited they were picking a healthy organic snack.  During this time they had a nice selection out, but have since grown to include a very large selection for not only baby, but the entire family.  We continued (well the kids because I am not the greatest eater) to eat everything well into Kaylee’s second year when I found out I was pregnant with Kaleb.  I was thrilled to have another little one to enjoy Happy Family!

As my pregnancy progressed I began to look into the new products Happy Family had put out.  Our local store only carries a very limited selection which usually includes the banana Happy Puffs and perhaps two Happy Baby – Simple Combos, so we had only been purchasing the puffs.  I was shocked to see their new products and I was lucky to have the pleasure to try some out with Kaleb (the Drama Queens were just as excited).  I knew our local Target had a larger variety (as does another grocery store not as close as our small store), so I headed there to stock up.  Happy Family sent me some free and money off coupons, but I knew I would be getting a lot more than that.  I was happy to find the stuff I already knew the kids love, but even more excited to find the Happy Creamies, Happy Munchies (the rice cakes, which I had not seen any where else) and a nice selection of Happy Puffs.  We were very stocked in Happy Baby, Happy Tot and Happy Tot Plus and they also had the Happy Bellies, Happy Tot Meal Bowls and more.

Kaleb is not a picky eater and has loved every product he has tried. Though he is picky when it comes to multiple Happy Family products on his tray at once.  On their own he just loves Happy Puffs or Munchies, but if you put the two together on his tray he will go for the Happy Munchies first, however Happy Yogis (and now since we were able to try the Happy Creamies) beat out everything.  He will never turn down a Happy Yogi! The Drama Queens still very much enjoy Happy Puffs, Yogis and the Apple Happy Baby pouches.  I am looking forward to trying the Happy Squeeze Treat Caramel Apple over some vanilla frozen yogurt and planning on stocking up on more Happy Squeezes come the summer for some nice frozen yogurt smoothies.

Happy Family is a hit with our family.  If you want a tasty and organic snack or meal for your family their products are a must have.

Sharing some Happy Puffs!

Ameda Intimates™ Nursing Camisole Review

I love nursing. I have been able to nurse all four of my children, though not exclusive and only very little with Khloe and I feel blessed. I love that it is just our time, no daddy or siblings can share this time. It is our cuddle time, quiet time, soothing time. Kaleb has been nursed the most out of all four children and is still going strong. Of course this means I have to have an accommodating wardrobe to easily nurse on the go. You will often find me with Kaleb in the carrier nursing and walking. This can be a task if I don’t have clothing that works well with nursing. I have come to learn and incorporate a layered look. Wearing a t-shirt with a higher collar means a camisole will be needed to cover my stomach area when I pull the shirt up, wearing a low cut top for easy pull down means needing a camisole to cover extra cleavage I have gained from nursing. The problem with regular camisoles is sometimes they are too fitted at the breast and I can’t pull them down, especially holding a squirming baby screaming to eat. Ameda has made things much easier with their Ameda Intimates™ nursing camisole and nursing bra.

Features

  • Lightly absorbent microfiber fabric prevents bacteria growth and odors
  • Fabric is free of harmful substances, reducing the risk of skin irritation and allergy for both mom and baby
  • Dual knit side panels adapt to a mother’s changing shape
  • Drop cup design with one-hand release clasp provides easy access for breastfeeding in public.
  • A variety of breast sizes (A-J cups) and flexible sizing for the right fit the first time
  • Machine washable

Ameda Nursing CamisoleI receive the nursing camisole and I am in love.  I paired it last night heading to my nursing group with a low cut top so I could easily nurse as we commuted there by train (unfortunately I forgot to grab a picture of myself wearing the camisole).  Kaleb approves of the camisole by having to rub it because he thought it was so soft.  Made from lightly absorbent microfiber fabric it was not only nice and soft, but it had a great stretch.   The fabric is free of harmful substances which reduces the risk of skin irritation and allergies for mom and baby.  I can feel safe wearing it and know if Kaleb puts it into his mouth I don’t have to worry.   It also left a nice smooth look under my shirt as well, it making me feel like I have a finished and flawless look, rather than a frumpy SAHM look.

Ameda Nursing Camisole claspI’m particularly fond of the closure.  Unlike many of the nursing bras and camisoles I have tried Ameda features a one-hand clasp for easy removal, with some of the others I often find myself fumbling to release.  It was also very easy to close, which some I have a very hard time getting it to fit into place just right.  I am not really sure how to describe the clasp itself, you kind of slide the two pieces together and then clip it closed.  It reminds me of a bathing suit I had as a child.  This is different from others that often didn’t fit well together or had an overly tight fitting clasp.  The straps are very comfortable as very easy to adjust.  I almost forgot I was wearing it because the straps didn’t dig in like other camisoles I have tried.

I really like the cinching in the middle of the cups which help with support and separating your breasts.  Underneath the breasts there is a nice double layered support (I am not really sure I would call it an actual elastic because it is just the way the fabric is sewn to get an elastic function) and left me able to wear the camisole without a bra.  The breast opening has a nice stretch and room for even larger breasts to have enough room without covering any part or having your breast slip back in if your baby comes off.

My last major love and mommy time save is that the nursing camisole (bra as well) is machine washable!  Yes you read that right you can wash it with all your other laundry.  Many of the nursing camisoles and bras I own now have to be hand washed, which can really be a pain, especially when you have multiple little ones running around.

Deciding my size was very simple using their easy to follow chart.  On the left I went to my cup size (D) and on the top I went to my band size (36) which made me a size 3.

Where to buy

Both the nursing camisole and bra are available now in beige for $39.99 (bra) and $44.99 (camisole) at Amedadirect.com, Amedaonline.com, and Amedababy.com.  Black is coming soon.
